For this university assignment, I was tasked with creating a typographic design system to brand the "New European Bauhaus" campaign. The goal was to develop a design that could be applied across various platforms, including posters, brochures, and social media, to communicate the campaign’s response to climate change and economic recovery in a post-COVID world. While the campaign draws inspiration from the iconic 1920s Bauhaus movement, my challenge was to rethink and renew the style, adapting it to our contemporary context—essentially, "making it of our own age and time".
In approaching this project, I focused on balancing the historical influence of Bauhaus with a fresh, modern interpretation. Drawing inspiration from Bauhaus principles of functionality and form, I used bold, geometric typographic elements to convey the seriousness of the issues at hand. However, I consciously avoided directly mimicking the Bauhaus style, instead seeking to innovate within its framework.
I experimented with color, juxtaposing bright orange with stark black to create visual tension and urgency. These choices reflected the drastic concerns of the climate crisis and the post-pandemic economic landscape. The typographic design incorporated dynamic layouts and dramatic scaling, ensuring the design could be adapted for posters, brochures, and social media platforms while maintaining a cohesive visual identity across mediums.
The final design successfully conveyed the urgency and gravity of the New European Bauhaus campaign, with its bold use of color and typography standing out across various media platforms. The bright orange contrasted with black demanded attention, while the striking typographic arrangements encouraged the audience to engage and take action. The campaign materials—posters, brochures, and social media graphics—were effective in communicating the complex challenges of climate change and economic recovery in a way that felt both modern and impactful. This project demonstrated the power of typographic design to drive home a message of urgency and inspire action.
